Rosemary Gresham has no family beyond the band of former urchins that helped her survive as a girl in the mean streets of London. Grown now, they concentrate on stealing high-value items and have learned how to blend into upper-class society. But when Rosemary must determine whether a certain wealthy gentleman is loyal to Britain or to Germany, she is in for the challenge of a lifetime. How does one steal a family’s history, their very name?
Peter Holstein, given his family’s German blood, writes his popular series of adventure novels under a pen name. With European politics boiling and his own neighbors suspicious of him, Peter debates whether it might be best to change his name for good. When Rosemary shows up at his door pretending to be a historian and offering to help him trace his family history, his question might be answered.
But as the two work together and Rosemary sees his gracious reaction to his neighbors’ scornful attacks, she wonders if her assignment is going down the wrong path. Is it too late to help him prove that he’s more than his name?
First of all, this cover is fabulous! I just love it! I knew I wanted to read this book based on the cover alone! And I am so happy to report I loved the inside just as much! This is without a doubt my favorite Roseanna White novel to date. The characters in this book make it memorable, combined with the most insteresting and fun plot. There is humor, mystery, spies, lies, danger, and characters that you cant help but love and admire. I wasn’t sure I would grow to love Rosemary, but she won me over with her outspoken nature and her loyalty to Peter. I thought her background and her line of work were such an interesting and brilliantly unique change of pace for a heroine of a story. I loved it! Peter was imperfectly perfect. I was instantly a fan of his character, but I wasn’t expecting his sense of humor. It was the best surprise of his character, and he was full of surprises! I so enjoyed this book because the plot was different than anything I had read before in a historical fiction, the characters were unique and fun, and the mystery element in the story kept you guessing until the end. I cannot wait to see where this series goes! I am a definite fan!
