The Ringmaster’s Wife by Kristy Cambron

In turn-of-the-century America, a young girl dreams of a world that stretches beyond the confines of a quiet life on the family farm. With little more than her wit and a cigar box of treasures to call her own, Mable steps away from all she knows, seeking the limitless marvels of the Chicago World’s Fair. There, a chance encounter triggers her destiny—a life with a famed showman by the name of John Ringling.

A quarter of a century later, Lady Rosamund Easling of Yorkshire, England, boards a ship to America as a last adventure before her life is planned out for her. There, the twenties are roaring, and the rich and famous gather at opulent, Gatsby-esque parties in the grandest ballrooms the country has to offer. The Jazz Age has arrived, and with it, the golden era of the American circus, whose queen is none other than the enigmatic Mable Ringling.

When Rosamund’s path crosses with Mable’s and the Ringlings’ glittering world, she makes the life-altering decision to leave behind a comfortable future of estates and propriety, instead choosing the nomadic life of a trick rider in the Ringling Brothers’ circus.
My Thoughts:

This book is one of my favorites.  The characters, the descriptive imagery, the setting, they are all perfection.  This book just sticks with you long after you have read it.  This is my second time reading this book and I love it more than I did the first time.  I was worried initially that the double story line would be confusing or not come together well, but it it seamless.  This book kept my interest from start to finish.  Kristy Cambron has such a way with descriptive writing that you literally feel as though you are transported to another time and place.  All of the characters in this book seem to come to life right off of the pages.  They are genuine, natural and connect with the reader on so many levels.  Exploring the world of the circus is magical!  I am not sure if I could choose which story line I loved more, they are equally beautiful and moving.  One of my favorite scenes is when Mable visits her friend Sally on her wedding day.  Cue all the tears.  There is so much heart in this story that just pours from each of the characters and their experiences through the story in this book.  Such a touching story of love and a life well lived.  This is a must read!  It is impeccably written and will become an instant favorite.
